Chelsea have had a £50m offer for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain rejected by the Serie A club, ESPN
Higuain joined Napoli from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013, having played for three years under current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho – and linking up with Mourinho’s predecessor at Stamford Bridge, Rafael Benitez, who took interim charge of the Londoners last season.
Napoli have made clear they are not willing to sell Higuain, who has scored 14 goals in 21 games so far for the club, but Mourinho has earmarked Higuain as the player he wants to sign in January and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is willing to back the manager. Should Chelsea clinch the signing of Higuain the deal would command a fee greater than the club record £50m paid to Liverpool to sign Fernando Torres in January 2011.
Mourinho can already call on Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o to spearhead Chelsea’s attack, while the club also have Romelu Lukaku on their books, with the Belgium international spending the season on loan at Everton having previously been sent to West Bromwich Albion.
