Chelsea make approach to re-sign Matic

Chelsea are attempting to re-sign Nemanja Matic from Benfica, Sky Sports has reported, three years after letting the midfielder move to Portugal as part of the deal to sign David Luiz.

Matic moved to Stamford Bridge in 2009 but made only three appearances before leaving the club. Jose Mourinho has however identified the Serbia international as an option to strengthen his midfield this month.

Sky Sports cite reports that Matic has a buyout clause of around £37m but it is thought Chelsea’s offer is more like £20m for a player with nine international caps. Matic was part of the Benfica side which lost to Chelsea in the Europa League final last season and helped his club to a runners-up spot in the Portuguese league, claiming the Player of the Year award.

The 26-year-old joined Chelsea from MFK Kosice, having played 70 games for the Slovakian club, and went on to make his Blues debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers as a late substitute. He also spent time on loan at Vitesse Arnhem in 2010-11.
