Manchester United go to Stamford Bridge on Sunday knowing that defeat will, in all likelihood, rule them completely out of the Premier League title race.
And hosts Chelsea will be in a confident mood after a run of five consecutive wins, during which they have only conceded once. They also possess one of this season’s outstanding Premier League players in Eden Hazard, who was on target in their last game at Hull City as the Blues battled to victory. Jose Mourinho’s team come into this game in third, but ominously just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
After three successive defeats, Man Utd pulled off a much-needed win against Swansea City, but once again it was far from convincing. They were definitely better in the second half, but against opponents who looked very unlikely to create any meaningful opportunities, they struggled to impose themselves effectively. Nevertheless, it should give them renewed belief ahead of this enormous test.
Branislav Ivanovic is still out for Chelsea, but Frank Lampard could return, while new signing Nemanja Matic is likely to be on the bench.
Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez look set to continue in attack for Man Utd after manager David Moyes ruled out key duo Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. Fabio da Silva completes a three match ban.
