Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that he is looking to make one major signing before the January transfer window closes on Friday, Sky
Basel winger Mohamed Salah was reportedly high on Liverpool’s list of targets, but the Egyptian has now joined Chelsea, leaving the Reds with a somewhat thin squad with several injured players including Jose Enrique, Daniel Agger, Mamadou Sakho, Glen Johnson and Lucas Leiva.
Speaking after Liverpool’s resounding 4-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton, Rodgers said: “I think we will hopefully do something over the next couple of days. I saw some headlines after Monday’s press conference in terms of the manager being angry with the club – nothing is further from the truth.
“We are not just going to get the players we want to get in for a number of reasons. Hopefully we can have a major signing before the window shuts and if we can do that we will be set up for the remaining games.”
On his side’s win, which was given to them by Steven Gerrard’s header, two quick-fire Daniel Sturridge strikes and a breakaway goal from Luis Suarez, Rodgers added: “I think all wins are important but especially against your rivals and psychologically it was a big win and can re-iterate the confidence and belief in the squad.
“We have to keep our foot to the floor and keep these performances and keep scoring goals. This was a massive game. I think we have shown all season we are going to be in contention for fourth place.”
