Long committed to giving his all for West Brom cause amid future uncertainty

West Brom star Shane Long has insisted that he remains focused on helping the Baggies’ Premier League cause, amid rife speculation that his time at the Hawthorns could be winding down, according to The Guardian.

Long moved to West Brom for a then-club record fee of up to £6.5m from Reading in August 2011, and while he is seen as a popular figure at the club he was believed to be on the verge of signing for fellow Premier League outfit Hull towards the end of the summer transfer window, but the deal collapsed at the 11th hour.

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, however, and with the Tigers reportedly still keen on the Republic of Ireland international speculation has begun once again about whether he will stay until the end of the season, or if new West Brom boss Pepe Mel can be tempted to part company with Long during the current transfer window rather than run the risk of losing him for nothing in the summer.

Speaking after West Brom’s tight 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Saturday, Long confirmed that he is all too aware of the rumours surrounding his future, and while he did not confirm he will be staying at the club he did impress his desire to give his all while he remains there.

The 26-year-old said: “All I know is that there are plenty of rumours, but no one has said anything to me and, unless something happens in the next couple of weeks, I am just concentrating on giving everything to West Brom.”

Long also took the time to praise his team-mates and caretaker manager Keith Downing, who lost only that one game during his five-game stint at the helm before handing over to new manager Mel.

He continued: “Keith Downing and Dean Kiely did a great job in a short time. They took over when confidence was low. We knew we had the players but we had not been playing well and in fairness to him he got it out of us.

“It would have been nice to have ended his spell with a win to thank him for his efforts.”
