Manchester United are going to go head-to-head with Chelsea in the race to sign Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, with the champions having made the youngster a priority target for the summer, writes the Daily
Manager David Moyes has suggested that his side are unlikely to bring any more new faces to Old Trafford during the January transfer window, having already signed playmaker Juan Mata from the Blues for a club record £37.1m.
Moyes was involved in a high-profile chase for Everton left-back Leighton Baines last summer, but was unsuccessful, and it now looks unlikely that he return to his pursuit of the England international.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has recently been selecting Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back, despite it not being the Spaniard’s natural position. The London club appear to be leading the race to sign Shaw, who supports Chelsea.
Shaw, who is rated at £30m, has been highly rated since breaking into the Southampton first-team. He is now also a regular starter for the England U-21s. This season, the 18-year-old has made 20 appearances for the Saints, helping them to ninth in the Premier League.
