Man Utd edging closer to Garay signing

Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal to sign Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, who has been a long-term target of the Premier League champions, according to the Metro.

The Argentina international has been the subject of interest from Man Utd in each of the last four transfer windows, with Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes both among Garay’s admirers. Despite Benfica’s insistence that the player is not for sale, he now looks poised to make the move to Old Trafford.

Portuguese newspaper Abola has claimed that Garay is on the brink signing an agreement to leave Benfica for England at the end of the season. The mooted transfer fee is £8m.

There have been questions raised over Man Utd’s central defenders this season, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic seen by some to be past their best and somewhat injury prone, while Jonny Evans has proved to be their most consistent performer at the back.

Garay has been at Benfica since joining from Real Madrid in the summer of 2011. Since then he has helped them to the Europa League final in 2013, and consecutive second placed finishes in the Portuguese Superliga, scoring six goals in 109 appearances.
