Man Utd send Rooney for warm-weather training

Manchester United have sent striker Wayne Rooney for warm-weather training in a race to get him fit for the clash with Chelsea on January 19, according to the Guardian.

The England forward has been missing with a groin injury he sustained in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on New Year’s Day.

United manager David Moyes said: “We have sent Wayne away on a hot-weather break. His groin has not quite recovered yet.

“We have sent a fitness coach with him. He’s away with the family. Hopefully we will get him fit for Chelsea.”

The 28-year-old has not played in the recent defeats to Swansea and Sunderland as he underwent a scan on his groin last Friday.

Rooney and Robin van Persie, who is out with a thigh injury, have only managed to start seven of their side’s 20 Premier League matches together this season.

The former Everton striker has netted nine goals in 16 league starts so far this campaign and is the team’s current top scorer over all competitions.

The Red Devils hope to get him fit in time for a crucial game with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea as both Rooney and van Persie will be absent for the Premier League encounter with Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday.
