New Man United signing Juan Mata is relishing the prospect of linking up with Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, reports Sky
It looked at one point in the summer as though the pair could be playing together in the blue of Chelsea instead, but Rooney now looks set to commit his future to the Red Devils with a new £300k-per-week, five-year contract, and the club-record £37.5m capture of the Spanish international has instead seen the pair linking up at Old Trafford under David Moyes.
United have endured a mediocre season by their own standards, but the signing of the 25-year-old, who enjoyed adoration at Stamford Bridge, is seen by many as a huge lift for Moyes in his first season in charge.
Speaking at the press conference held to unveil Mata to the press for the first time as a Man United player, the attacking midfielder said: “I cannot wait to play alongside him [Rooney]. For me he is one of the best players in the history of this country.
“He is unbelievable. He is a striker who can score, assist, who can come to the midfielder to take the ball and try to move, so I think I will enjoy a lot (playing) alongside him.
“For me he is an unbelievable player and I will try to connect with him as much as I can.”
Mata is keen to show the Old Trafford faithful just what he can bring to the team: “I will try to find the gaps between the rival defences because that is what I used to do.
“I did this last season and I think that is my best kind of playing (position). I will try to be in the position I have to be to try and assist the strikers.”
