Arsene Wenger is keen to tie four key players down to new contracts, reports Sky
Captain Thomas Vermaelen is among the players likely to be offered a new deal at the Emirates, despite the Belgian finding playing time difficult to come by this season as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny continue to establish themselves as the preferred defensive partnership.
Wenger, however, still believes the Belgian is capable of bringing much to the table for the Gunners, and the former Ajax defender will be offered the chance to extend his stay in north London.
Speaking to Arsenal.com, Wenger said: “I am ready to extend his contract. We want Thomas Vermaelen to be happy and have the number of games a player of his class deserves. On my side, I have a high respect for his qualities and attitudes and I am ready to extend his contract.
“At the moment we’re all on board for something this season that is respectable. At the end of the season I can sit down with Thomas and see what he thinks about it.”
Mertesacker is one of the other players thought to be preparing to look over a new contract, with Bacary Sagna and Tomas Rosicky making up the quintet of stars with new offers on the way.
With the exception of 29-year-old Mertesacker, all of the players involved are over the age of 30, and considering Arsenal’s general policy for new contract offers to players over that age it could be likely that the deals put forward will be for a 12 month extension, though the club have been reported to consider exceptions if the player proves himself worthy of such an offering.
