Moyes backs Januzaj to become Man United legend

Man United manager David Moyes has tipped young striker Adnan Januzaj to become an all-time great at the club, according to

The Belgian-born striker has lit up the atmosphere at Old Trafford at times this season, earning plaudits from the media and neutrals as the breakthrough star of United’s campaign thus far, and Moyes appears keen to protect his new hero.

The superlatives have been matched with a more worrying reputation of going to ground a bit too easily at times, but his manager is confident that his talent will shine through and will form the basis of the 18-year-old’s legacy.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Moyes said: “I am not bothered at all [about Januzaj’s reputation as a diver]. He is such a talented footballer.

“I have no doubt he will go on to be one of the best players to be playing in this country for a long time and probably even at Manchester United. I remember when [Cristiano] Ronaldo came over, a lot of people said the same thing about him. Not for a minute would I try to compare him to Ronaldo because of how good he is.

“But the boy is only 18. He will get better. He will learn. He will understand the game more. What he is doing is making a contribution in the games as a footballer.”

Januzaj was booked during the New Year’s Day defeat at home to Tottenham, but Moyes was also quick to defend his player, stating his belief that the booking was wrong.

He continued: “I have to say, I thought it was the wrong decision made the other night.

“I am always the first one to come out and say I won’t have the players diving. I am going to try to deal with it. In the same breath, I am going to protect them when I think it is wrong and I thought it was wrong the other night.”
