Newcastle look set to continue in their pursuit of Remy Cabella, and hope to offer the 23-year-old hopes of Champions League football next season, according to The
The Magpies are hoping that a real push for Europe’s elite cup competition will be enough to convince prized asset Yohan Cabaye to remain at St. James’ Park, and hope countryman Cabella will join him on Tyneside.
The Journal reports that Cabella is keen on a move to the north east, and will push current club Montpellier to talk business with the Toon Army, but the French outfit want at least £12.5m for the former France U-21 international.
Newcastle hope that the offer of paying any transfer fee in full will help them to secure a slightly lower transfer fee, and negotiations are believed to be ongoing between the two clubs, with Montpellier believed to be ready to sell despite head coach Rolland Courbis’ recent comments which appeared to attack the Geordie club.
The player’s father Hector is believed to have confirmed to the French media that Cabella is willing to move to Newcastle, but Courbis’ comments seemed to dispel such a notion.
He said: “I hope another club (other than Newcastle) tries to buy him. They are not a big club. Newcastle, as a player, I wouldn’t even want to spend a week there.”
Cabaye, meanwhile, has been linked with a move to Man United and French giants PSG, but is thought to be keen on performing to the full extent for his current club and hopes to excel any potential summer transfers by giving his club the option to boast Champions League football next term.
Cabaye said: “We are in good shape. Champions League is a bigger level but we have the capacity to just stay next to the big teams. If we are still in a similar position (to challenge for the top four) by the end of the season why not?
“For me the most important thing, as I said, is to do my best for the team. If the manager or the staff are happy with my performance and the fans who are supporting me are happy, I am happy.
“My mentality hasn’t changed. Even after what happened in the summer – and I will do my best for the team every day.”
