Newcastle set to part company with Gutierrez

Newcastle United midfielder and vice-captain Jonas Gutierrez looks set to leave the Premier League club after posting messages on Twitter on Saturday, BBC Sport has reported.

Gutierrez was one of Kevin Keegan’s final signings as Newcastle manager, arriving in the summer of 2008 from Real Mallorca. He experienced relegation in his first season, but helped the Magpies return to the top-flight as Championship title winners in 2010.

Since then he has played a major role in helping Newcastle re-cement their place in the Premier League, helping them to a fifth placed finish against all the odds in 2012, going on to figure in last season’s Europa League campaign.

This time around, however, he has hardly featured in the match day squad under Alan Pardew, partly due to an injury he suffered against Manchester City in the opening game of the season.

And Gutierrez, who has made an overall total of 195 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, scoring 11 goals, said on Twitter: “I enjoy my five years at the club, I hope the club finish the highest this season and the best to my team-mates.”

He added: “It was an honour and a pleasure to play with the Newcastle shirt and to have the support of the Geordie.”
