Southampton vs West Brom – Premier League preview and team news

New West Bromwich Albion Head Coach Pepe Mel will be watching from the stands at Southampton as Keith Downing ends his time in temporary charge.

The Saints will have been thankful that they were able to shake off the challenge of Championship high-flyers Burnley in their FA Cup third tie, as victory was a welcome boost for a side which has severely struggled for form since the end of November, with a heavy home loss to Chelsea being their most recent Premier League setback. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be aware that his standards are being allowed to slip.

After it seemed that Pepe Mel was out of the running to take charge of West Brom, an agreement was made on Thursday and the Spaniard was appointed the new Head Coach. The former Real Betis boss takes over a talented squad of players, while Keith Downing will stay at the club. Downing has had a decent record while filling in, going unbeaten throughout his four Premier League matches.

Southampton striker Pablo Osvaldo is serving the second game of a three match ban, while Artur Boruc, Victor Wanyama and Guillermo Do Prado are all injured. Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez are both slight doubts.

Victor Anichebe, Youssouf Mulumbu and Billy Jones are all pushing for a return to the West Brom team after they all missed the FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace.
