Sunderland have signed Argentinian defender Santiago Vergini on loan for the rest of the season, according to SAFC.com.
Vergini has been handed the number 27 shirt on Wearside, and represents manager Gus Poyet’s second January signing following the loan signing of Marcos Alonso.
The 25-year-old will look to help his new club successfully avert the threat of relegation which currently looms over the Stadium of Light, but a recent upturn in fortunes has given the Wearside faithful that such a task is not doomed to failure.
The club find themselves second bottom of the Premier League, sitting a point away from the safe spots – but considering they were, at one point, cemented in bottom spot five points adrift of then-second bottom Crystal Palace there is belief that the club could become only the second in Premier League history to avoid relegation having been bottom of the table on New Year’s Day.
They next face Man United in the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.
