Mauricio Pochettino has said that he will stay on as Southampton manager for the time being, and his first game without the support of former chairman Nicola Cortese is away to resurgent Sunderland.
The home side will be looking to build on what was an amazing result at Fulham, and one that may have struck fear into their relegation rivals and emphasised the improvements made under Gustavo Poyet. From now until the end of the season, home games will be important for the Black Cats, as Everton are the only members of the current top eight who still have to go to the Stadium of Light this season.
Southampton picked up a much needed – and well deserved – first home win since November with a narrow victory over West Bromwich Albion, a result which saw them close the gap on nearest rivals Newcastle. However, all the talk has been about Cortese’s departure and whether Pochettino would follow him out of St. Mary’s, but the Argentine will continue for now at least.
Sunderland are still without defender Carlos Cuellar, while Vito Mannone is likely to continue in goal with Kieren Westwood absent.
For the visitors, Calum Chambers could return after illness forced him to miss the West Brom game. Pablo Osvaldo completes a three match ban, and Victor Wanyama is injured.
