Tottenham’s Holtby open to Schalke return

The agent of Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby has admitted that his client would be interested in a return to former club Schalke 04 during the January transfer window, Sky Sports is reporting.

Holtby only joined Tottenham from the Bundesliga club in January 2013, but has grown frustrated at his lack of first-team action and is desperate for some playing time in order to boost his hopes of being called up by Germany to this year’s World Cup.

Brought to the club by Andre Villas-Boas, the 23-year-old has only made 18 starts, and has only completed the full 90 minutes on four occasions out of his 38 appearances overall. That is mainly due to the number of players competing with him for a place in the team, with Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Andros Townsend among the other options that Spurs possess in his position.

This season, he has appeared in 12 Premier League games and scored once, away to Fulham in December.

The player’s agent, Marcus Noack, has believes that Holtby would be open to a return to Schalke, and says a loan deal may be the most likely outcome. He said: “Lewis is desperate to play, which is why we are looking intensively for solutions. Schalke is an interesting option.”
