Vermaelen relishing the major tests ahead as Arsenal bid to regain title

Thomas Vermaelen is relishing the excitement at the top of the Premier League this season, according to

The 28-year-old Arsenal captain is seeing his side right in the mix in one of the most unpredictable Premier League title run-ins since the competition began in 1992, with the Gunners presently holding the top spot in the league. However, they find themselves only nine points clear of Everton who are in sixth place, and the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham occupy the slots in between.

Speaking to Arsenal Player, the Belgian said: “It is very exciting. This is what you work for as a player, you want to fight for first spot and be involved in a lot of big games.

“England is maybe the only league where you can get so many great games in a season, and for a player that is what you do it for. We had a tough week in the first half of the season, when we played Dortmund, Liverpool and Manchester United, but it is great to play these massive games.

“In England, anything can happen and there are always surprises every single weekend. It will be a long race until the end of the season.”

Arsenal face a tough run in February, with consecutive games seeing them travel to Liverpool before hosting Man United, then taking on Bayern Munich at the Emirates in the Champions League, before hosting recently resurgent Sunderland.

March sees a similar run of fixtures, with the return game at Bayern Munich kicking off a sequence that involves travelling to Tottenham and Chelsea, before hosting Man City.

With so little in it and so much at stake, Vermaelen and co. will have to be at their best to maintain their title challenge, but manager Arsene Wenger is thought to be closing in on the capture of Julian Draxler to help take the goalscoring burden from Olivier Giroud.
