Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has backed team-mate Luke Shaw, stating that St. Mary’s is the best place for the 18-year-old at the moment, reports Sky
Shaw has emerged as a transfer target for some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, with the likes of Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool said to be interested, but Ward-Prowse is convinced that the youngster should remain at Saints for the time being.
“Obviously there is a little bit of banter flying around about the headlines, but that is just normal in football,” said Ward-Prowse, 19.
“His feet are on the ground, his head is in at the right place at the moment, and he put in a great performance against Arsenal. He is settled, that is the main thing. You can see the fans love him as well, which is a good thing. This is the best place to be, at the moment.”
Shaw put in another starring display when Southampton hosted Arsenal in their 2-2 draw on Tuesday night, and the performance was simply the latest of many as the left-back continues to excite Southampton fans, as well as neutrals, alike.
With the World Cup fast approaching, many are speculating that Shaw’s recent performances could bag himself a late place on Roy Hodgson’s radar, though others would argue that such a calling would be too early for the defender.
Shaw has represented England at U-16, U-17 and U-21 levels thus far, and has made 45 appearances for the south coast club so far.
