Former Liverpool winger John Barnes has predicted Brendan Rodgers’ side will miss out on the Premier League title this season, Sky
Barnes believes the Reds will qualify for the Champions League but says an automatic place in the competition is the most realistic aim. “I think they’ll be in the top four definitely, but I think they will finish third, I don’t think they will win the league,” Barnes said.
“If we can keep our best XI fit and consistently playing well we have a chance but history shows us that doesn’t happen over a season,” Barnes added. “If you look at what we have on the bench to supplement and improve us if needed, we haven’t got the quality that’s needed in terms of depth.
“But if we can finish in the top four, which I’m sure we will, then next season we can make more signings, better signings and make a real challenge”
Barnes, who also represented Watford, Newcastle United and Charlton Athletic in his playing career, made more than 400 appearances for Liverpool in a spell that ran from 1987 to 1997. He won two league titles while at Anfield, two FA Cups and the League Cup, as well as accruing 79 caps for England.
