The Gunners meet Bayern on Wednesday evening in the last 16 of the Champions League, a year after Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern won the trophy, eliminating Arsenal along the way.
Wenger didn’t dispute that Bayern are currently the best team in the world, but did say that in his opinion, Barca were even stronger at their pomp under Guardiola.
“I was most impressed by the Barcelona team at the peak, through the speed of their passing and the speed of their game,” Wenger said.
“Until now, in my life, it’s the best team I’ve played against. The first time we played them at the Emirates, the first half an hour was the best I’ve seen.”
Wenger added that while there’s little room for Guardiola to improve on Bayern’s treble-winning season under Heynckes, matching the success of 12 months ago would in itself be a remarkable feat.
“Last year Bayern won everything,” Wenger continued. “Maybe in the style there is always room for improvement but if they just do the same achievements this season they can say they have improved because it’s more difficult to do it again.”
