Liverpool captain Gerrard can keep playing for several years, claims Pirlo

Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo has said that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has ‘many years left’ if he continues to play in a deep midfield role, Sky Sports has reported.

Since Lucas Leiva picked up an injury in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in January, Gerrard has been deployed in a deep midfield position by manager Brendan Rodgers, which has allowed the likes of Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho to come forward.

This is despite Gerrard spending much of his Reds career as an attacking player, but Pirlo believes that continuing to play in that role could extend his career by several years. The Italian said: “The intelligent players adapt and Gerrard has the ability to do that. He is an excellent passer of the ball, possesses an intelligent football brain, and has great vision.

“Top European clubs are always progressing with what they can do off the field. Training is getting more scientific, and we are constantly getting more educated on nutrition. If you look after yourself and are willing to adapt, there is no reason why you can’t play at the top level until your late 30’s.

“Gerrard is a top professional, it is very possible he has many years left for Liverpool and England in a new role.”

The duo are likely to come against each other in the World Cup this summer, as England face Pirlo’s Italy in their opening Group D match in Manaus on June 14.
