Liverpool fail to complete Konoplyanka deal

Liverpool have failed in their bid to bring Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka to Anfield after the Ukrainian club refused to sanction the player’s release, the

Guardian has reported.

This news comes despite Liverpool representatives travelling to Ukraine to try and make the deal happen. Konoplyanka had agreed terms with the Reds, but Dnipro president Ihor Kolomoyskyi refused to allow the 24-year-old to leave, despite Liverpool meeting his £16m release clause.

As a result, Liverpool end the January transfer window without having made any signings, with another target, Basel winger Mohamed Salah, moving to Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Manager Brendan Rodgers was left disappointed after the club was unable to secure the services of Konoplyanka, who has nine goals in 23 appearances this season. He said: “It certainly hasn’t been because of a lack of work by the football club. There are lots of people who have worked tirelessly to identify and find the right types of players. A lot of those players haven’t been able to become available for us.

“Of course, as a manager you would like to have strengthened – but I’m very optimistic with the group of players I still have available here. If we can keep those players fit, and maximise the availability for the rest of the season, we can have a great chance to have a really good finish.”
