Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is relying on the club’s senior players as the Blues get their Champions League challenge back under way, Sky
Galatasaray – managed by Mourinho’s Inter predecessor Roberto Mancini and with a team containing for Mourinho’s Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder and iconic Chelsea striker Didier Drogba – are the opposition on Wednesday. The first leg is played at Gala’s Turk Telekom Arena.
Mourinho said the likes of Petr Cech, John Terry and Frank Lampard will be crucial to Chelsea’s chances in the competition this season.
“These older players in Chelsea they have a big history in the Champions League. They’ve experienced everything in the Champions League,” Mourinho added.
“The most important thing for us in the Champions League is to have a feeling of knockout Champions League for the players that never did it. This is the first time that they play, some of them, Oscar and [Eden] Hazard and these kind of guys.”
Terry was suspended from the Chelsea side that won the Champions League in 2012 but Lampard, Cech and Ashley Cole each started the final, with David Luiz, Gary Cahill and John Obi Mikel also starting the game and still at Stamford Bridge. Fernando Torres was a late substitute.
