Mourinho won’t risk Chelsea pair Terry and Cahill

Chelsea could be without first choice central defensive pair John Terry and Gary Cahill for the FA Cup game with Manchester City, the Daily Telegraph has reported, as manager Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to risk the injury-afflicted duo.

The Blues are said to be hopeful both will be available to face City but a decision will be made over the next 48 hours. If the players don’t pass a fitness test then Branislav Ivanovic and David Luiz are expected to play at the heart of defence.

Terry has sat out Chelsea’s last two games, a 3-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Tuesday, but is understood to feel he will be ready for the cup fixture on Saturday.

Cahill meanwhile was injured in the game against the Baggies but has responded well to his initial treatment. The former Bolton defender hurt his calf against the Midlands club.

“Once I got the knock, I was struggling from then on,” Cahill said. “It happened when a West Brom player went for a header and I was on the floor, and he landed just inside my knee and calf.”

If Ivanovic and Luiz do replace Terry and Cahill it will see a further reshuffle in defence as Ivanovic has been Mourinho’s first-choice right-back. Cesar Azpilicueta would then move from left-back and Ashley Cole would return to the side, the Telegraph claims.

Chelsea went top of the Premier League by beating the Magpies and maintained their position even with the draw with Albion. City’s game against Sunderland was postponed due to adverse weather conditions while Arsenal and Manchester United drew on Wednesday.
