Rodgers: Liverpool defence not an issue

Brendan Rodgers has insisted he is not unduly concerned by the state of Liverpool’s defence, Sky Sports has reported.

The Reds beat Rodgers’ old side Swansea City in their last Premier League outing but conceded three goals in the process, eventually triumphing 4-3 against the struggling Welsh outfit.

Liverpool have conceded more league goals than any other side in the division’s top seven teams – 35, with Tottenham’s 33 a close second – but Rodgers says any defensive issues are the responsibility of the whole team.

“It’s a collective effort. When we attack and score goals it’s because of what we do as a team,” Rodgers told a Press conference.

“We conceded disappointing goals last weekend but ultimately, at this stage of the season, it’s about winning. We’ve put in some outstanding team performances over the last four to six weeks and been so exciting to watch going forward.

“Last weekend we conceded a few goals – one from a free-kick we were disappointed with, one a penalty and one an incredible finish from Jonjo Shelvey but it’s not about any one player or any one unit, it’s the whole team.

“We’ve scored 70 goals and we’re the highest goalscorers because we’re building a platform for the team to go forward and play. If we’re defending it’s because we haven’t pressed the ball well enough at the top of the field.

“Ultimately we won the game last weekend – and, let’s not forget, we were playing a very good team.”

Liverpool have kept only two clean sheets in their last 10 league games, the 4-0 win over Everton and the 2-0 win over Hull City. In that team Liverpool have beaten Stoke City 5-3, drawn 2-2 with Aston Villa, dispatched Arsenal 5-1 and won 3-2 at Fulham.
