Sherwood: Five defeats will keep Tottenham out of Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has claimed that his side can still qualify for the Champions League even if they lose up to five of their remaining 13 Premier League games, according to Sky Sports.

Spurs defeated Everton at the weekend and leapfrogged the Toffees into fifth place, just three points behind Liverpool and Champions League qualification.

“I haven’t looked at it, maths isn’t my strong point but I would say we can only possibly afford to lose four or five games maybe of what we have got left. That would be a huge tally,” said Sherwood.

“Someone could drop a couple but big rivals like Liverpool are flying and we need them to trip up, that is for sure.

“We’re looking upwards rather than behind us but we know it will be tough and there are teams behind us capable of putting a run together and sneaking fourth.”

Since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas in December, the 45-year-old has lost only one of his nine Premier League matches and believes Tottenham can afford to lose a few more, but feels it will still be a fight to the end of the season.

“It will go to the wire. I don’t think anything will be secured until the last month of the season. I would say Newcastle have to consider themselves in it and possibly Southampton, Manchester United for sure,” added the Spurs boss.

“Our target is fourth place and it always has been, if we can get higher than that then great but it is the target we are looking for.”
