The Argentina international moved to White Hart Lane in the summer, becoming the club’s record buy when leaving Roma for £30m. But a thigh injury has meant Lamela has started only three Premier League games this season and the back injury means he will be out until around April.
Tottenham Coach Tim Sherwood acknowledged Lamela’s struggles and admits the repeated injuries are only compounding matters.
“It is difficult to adapt to a different country, a different league and a different language as well,” Sherwood said.
“But when you are getting these niggles, and something more than minor at the moment, it is disappointing for the lad.”
Lamela has made a total of 17 appearances for the Premier League club, scoring once in the Europa League against Sheriff Tiraspol, a game in which he also won Spurs a penalty.
The 21-year-old joined Roma in 2011 after making the grade in his homeland with River Plate. Lamela made 66 appearances for i Lupi, scoring 15 times.
