Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has refused to sign a new contract with the club until the side qualify for the Champions League, according to the
The Belgian still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract but the club wish to offer him a new deal in the summer.
The club now fear that the defender will not wish to stay with the London club if they cannot promise him Champions League football next season.
“Am I happy staying without Champions League football? Those are always difficult questions,” said Vertonghen.
“What I want is to play in the Champions League with Tottenham so hopefully I will get there this year.
“Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup.”
Tottenham lost 1-0 to Norwich on Sunday, which left them six points behind the last Champions league qualifying spot.
The 26-year-old was very critical of his side’s performance in the loss and stated that they must improve if they are to have any chance of playing against Europe’s elite next season.
“For me it is just not good enough and we need to raise up our game to compete with the other top teams,” he added.
