Wenger: No future Arsenal bid for Suarez

Arsene Wenger has insisted Arsenal will not make another offer for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, Sky Sports has reported.

The Gunners attempted to sign the Uruguay international last summer, lodging a bid of £1 over £40m in an attempt to trigger a release clause then contained in Suarez’s contract.

But the clause only meant Liverpool had to consider the offer and still gave the Reds the right to reject the approach, which they duly did. Suarez said he wanted to leave Anfield but, having been forced to remain, eventually signed a new deal with the club.

The sides meet on Saturday and Wenger has said that while he may have small regrets over the failed offer, he has moved on.

“You sometimes have regrets when players who played for you score goals or do well somewhere else,” Wenger said. “But he was never our player, it is a situation that didn’t come off and that is it.”

When asked if Arsenal would make a renewed attempt to sign Suarez, Wenger replied: “At the moment no, no.”

Arsenal go into the game on Merseyside top of the Premier League table, eight points clear of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool, who are fourth.
