Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor has warned his teammates to remain cautious about the threat of a relegation battle until they manage to reach the 40-point mark, the Birmingham
Four goals in 15 first half minutes gave Villa all three points against Norwich City last time out in the Premier League, lifting them to 11th in the table on 31 points, six points clear of the bottom three. That result has led to aspirations of a top half finish, but Agbonlahor insists that his side are not out of trouble just yet.
He said: “We’re on 31 points, not 40, so the fear is definitely still there. You never know in football. We have to keep on getting the results as early as possible and not leave it late. We want to pull away a bit more and try to get to that 40-point mark as quickly as we can.
“The gaffer gives us the confidence – his instructions are to go out and play freely. He doesn’t want us not to go forward and he gives us an attacking incentive. That came off against Norwich. Fingers crossed, we can continue to do it.”
The West Midlands club take on Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday at Villa Park, and Agbonlahor admits that they need a good performance to come away with anything from the game. He added: “We have to be on top of our performance to get anything.”
“We’re looking forward to it because they are the games players want to play in. We have had our ups and downs this season but it’s important we take the ups from the Norwich game going into the next two home games with confidence.’
