The draw for the competition’s quarter-finals takes place on Friday and Chelsea are in it courtesy of their 3-1 aggregate win over Galatasaray. Barca meanwhile dispatched Manchester City 4-1 on aggregate while Madrid routed Schalke 9-2 over their two games.
Rather than shy away from the tournament’s big guns, Hazard wants Chelsea to play one of La Liga’s heavyweights so he can come up against the consensus two best players in the world. That, he feels, will be a pivotal moment in his development as a player.
“For me, for a young player, it’s very important to test myself against Ronaldo or Messi,” Hazard said. “Just to be on the pitch with them would be good and I would try to do well.
“It’s an aspiration for me to be as good as Ronaldo and Messi. I watch a lot of games they play in and I try to be on the same level.”
The Belgium international was speaking to a newspaper in his homeland, Het Laatste Nieuws, and added that he wants to become more prolific to put the gloss on his contribution to the Blues and reach the standards set by Messi and Ronaldo.
“I want to score more because sometimes I play good, like against Galatasaray, but I don’t score,” the 23-year-old continued. “To be the best player in the world, I have to score more.
“I think it’s just in my head. I have to shoot more sometimes. I can make the pass, I can shoot and sometimes I make the pass, but I work on that.”
Hazard has to date scored 15 goals for Chelsea this season, two more than he managed in the whole of the previous campaign despite having played only 41 games this year compared to 62 the year before.
