Liverpool meet Tottenham in a crucial Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon, and it is a fixture which has produced plenty of memorable moments in the past:
A topsy-turvy game finally saw Liverpool come out on top against their in-form visitors in March 2013. Luis Suarez opened the scoring with a neat near-post finish, but early in the second half, the Reds found themselves behind through two goals from Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen.
However, from then on Tottenham were the architects of their own downfall as Kyle Walker’s errant back-pass allowed Stewart Downing to level the scores, before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty to win it following a foul by Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
There have been some excellent goals scored in this fixture over the years, but there have been none better than Erik Edman’s long range effort for Tottenham in April 2005. The left-back caught Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek out with a shot from just inside the opposition half to open the scoring after 12 minutes. The game ended 2-2, thanks to Sami Hyypia’s equaliser for the home side.
The meeting between the sides in Febuary 2012 delivered very little in the way of goalmouth incident, but although the football was instantly forgettable, the image of a cat invading the Anfield pitch definitely caught the imagination. The feline was ushered off the field of play within seconds, but it still provided the abiding memory as both goalkeepers were woefully underworked.
Head In Hands Moment
The big turning point of the encounter back in September 2006 was Jermaine Jenas’ inexplicable miss for Tottenham, sliding the ball wide with the goal at his mercy after some fine wing play from Edgar Davids. The England international was immediately punished by Liverpool, as Mark Gonzalez converted the rebound following Craig Bellamy’s close range shot that hit a post.
Liverpool scored twice more to give the scoreline a convincing look. Dirk Kuyt emphatically smashed home the second, before a blistering shot into the corner of the net from John Arne Riise made it 3-0.
