Man City still hunt for trophies insists Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini has insisted that Manchester City’s shock FA Cup defeat to holders Wigan Athletic will not damage their chances of more success this season, BBC Sport has reported.

In a repeat of last year’s FA Cup final match, City lost 2 – 1 at home to Wigan to end their chances of a domestic treble this season, having already secured the Capital One Cup.

City are currently nine points behind league leaders Chelsea, although they do boast three games in hand on their London rivals and will go top of the league providing they win them, thanks to their superior goal difference.

They also trail 2 – 0 to Barcelona in their last 16 tie of the Champions League, and will need to win score at least three away goals at the Nou Camp in order to progress.

Pellegrini said: “We have won one trophy and we have a lot of things to fight for until the end of the season. First we must win in Barcelona on Wednesday and then try to go top of the table with our three games in hand.”

On his sides performance against a spirited and well organised Wigan, Pellegrini pointed to a poor first half display.

I think we played the worst first half we have done in my time here,” added Pellegrini.

“We did not have the pace we needed against a team with Wigan’s intensity. We only reacted in the last 35 minutes. We scored one goal and we had at least three or four more chances to score more.”
