Man Utd can win Champions League, believes Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes has said that there is no reason why his side cannot win the Champions League this season after their comeback to beat Olympiakos in the last 16, writes the club’s official website.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg and on a poor run of form in all competitions, Man Utd overturned the deficit to win 3-2 on aggregate in reach the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2011.

While David De Gea made some crucial saves, Robin van Persie saw Man Utd past the Greek champions with a hat-trick. The first came from the penalty spot after a foul on the Dutchman by Jose Holebas. He then fired in on the stroke of half time before clinching the tie with a free-kick that caught goalkeeper Roberto out of position.

And although Moyes admits that his team will be underdogs for the rest of the competition, he believes that they are capable of winning it. He said: “I hope so. We will probably go into the quarter-final tie as underdogs but I don’t see why not [we can’t win the trophy].

“This football club is capable of it. If we play to our capabilities, which we’ve not shown that often this season, I think we can be a match for any team.

“This club has history in the competition. It knows what to do at this stage. We’re not shocked to be in the quarter-finals – it’s something we do regularly. We will try to get into the last four now.”
