Martinez won’t settle for sixth place

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has declared that his side will not settle for the sixth place spot in the Premier League and will aim as high as possible, according to

The Toffees are currently five points behind fifth place Tottenham but hold a game in hand over the London club.

Despite Manchester City’s League Cup triumph transforming sixth place into a potential European spot, Martinez is determined for his side to finish as high as possible in the table.

“We’ve never had it in our aims to finish sixth,” said the 40-year-old. “We want to finish as high as we can and that’s still the case.

“Obviously when the season finishes, you sit down, see where you are in the table and see where that leaves you. But I would never look at this season as one where we’re trying to fight for sixth position.”

Everton have had a good run this season and a sixth place finish for the Merseyside club could clinch their first place in a European competition since the 2009/10 season.

The Spanish boss also does not believe that the Premier League table is an accurate representation of Everton’s performances this season and is ambitious to grab as many points as he can.

“We are sixth now and over the season it’s about as low as we’ve been. In terms of results, I don’t think the table reflects the season we’ve had. We’ve had a game postponed and, among others, we’ve had two results recently (Tottenham and Chelsea) that didn’t match the performances,” added Martinez.

“So we are aspiring to finish the season as strong as we can and with as many points as we can. I don’t think our aim will be finishing sixth at this present time.”
