Mourinho: Drogba ‘has to’ return to Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has said that Didier Drogba is such a Chelsea icon he has to return to the club one day, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Drogba will be in opposition to Chelsea on Tuesday as his Galatasaray side play the Blues at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their Champions League tie. The score stands at 1-1 from the first meeting in Turkey and Drogba has said he won’t celebrate if he scores and Gala are victorious.

Mourinho added that Chelsea are aware of Drogba’s contractual situation with Gala – his current deal expires at the end of the season – and believes that one day Drogba will return to the London club.

“I don’t think it’s the right moment to speak about it,” Mourinho said, adding: “He’s a Galatasaray player. We know he’s a free agent. We know he finishes his contract at the end of the season, but we know it’s not the right moment.

“But when a person represents so much to a club and when a club represents so much to a person, and that’s the case, I think he has to be back one day.”

Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 games for Chelsea, with the last of them coming in the Champions League final when his header sent the game to extra-time. Drogba later scored the match-winning penalty as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in Bayern’s own Allianz Arena.
