Real Madrid watching Stoke’s Begovic

Real Madrid could make a summer approach for Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

A fee of £15m has been mooted for the Bosnia-Herzegovina international, the newspaper adds, with Los Blancos to move for the former Portsmouth stopper after the World Cup. Begovic is in line to represent his country at the tournament, Bosnia’s first international event as an independent nation.

Madrid’s current first choice goalkeeper, Diego Lopez, is wanted by Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s former team Milan and Ancelotti is a known admirer of Begovic, having twice tried to sign him when in charge of Chelsea.

Lopez is keeping captain Iker Casillas out of the side for La Liga games, with Casillas usually returning to the side for games in the Copa del Rey and occasional Champions League fixtures.

It is however considered unlikely Begovic would leave Stoke for Madrid as he would have to compete with Casillas for a place, whereas he is the undisputed No.1 at the Britannia Stadium.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also said to be interested in the 26-year-old, who has made 128 appearances for the Potters.
