Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said any success the club achieves will be built on the performances of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, according to the club’s official
The Reds are currently second in the table, four points behind leaders Chelsea but with a game in hand on the Blues, who also have to travel to Anfield later in the season.
Liverpool have recorded clean sheets in each of their last two games and Rodgers has revealed he has been impressed by the centre-backs.
“Both Martin and Daniel have been absolutely excellent,” Rodgers added. “They coped really well against Southampton – a team who score goals and pose a real threat.
“Our two centre-halves were also real pillars and strongholds of the team in the win at Old Trafford. As a team we worked tirelessly defensively to limit United to one shot on target – their lowest total at Old Trafford for five years.”
Rodgers added that while he wants Liverpool to be an attack-minded team and is willing to outscore the opposition if he has to, a strong central defensive is still crucial.
“We will continue to look to play an aggressive, attacking game,” Rodgers continued. “We’ve scored more goals than anyone but it’s equally important for us to defend.”
Liverpool have scored more goals than any team in the top four – racking up 76 compared to the 71 of Manchester City, 56 of Chelsea and 51 of Arsenal – but also have the leakiest defence.
The Liverpool backline has been breached 35 times whereas none of the other sides have conceded more than 30. Chelsea have let in the fewest goals, 23, while Arsenal have conceded 28 and City 27.
