Sherwood defiant over Tottenham transfer policy

Tottenham Head Coach Tim Sherwood has insisted that he must have the final say over the club’s transfers if he remains in charge for next season, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Sherwood’s future in the White Hart Lane hot seat has been the subject of intense speculation since he was given an 18-month contract to replace Andre Villas-Boas in December, with the likes of Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino and Dutch national team Coach Louis van Gaal linked with the post.

The experienced van Gaal has spoken of his desire to work in the Premier League, but Sherwood in keen on remaining in charge but would like control of the transfer policy at the North London club, with owner Daniel Levy and technical director Franco Baldini handling most of last summer’s negotiations.

Levy is now reportedly in talks with Ukrainian club Dnipro over the possibility of signing winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, and when asked about the subject, Sherwood admitted he had not recommended the 24-year-old. He said: “Nobody else will come in here unless I sanction it. You can’t work any other way. The manager has got to work with the players so, unless he gets the players he wants, it’s always going to be an uphill task.

“He will always have the excuse of ‘well they’re not my players’. I’m sure it’s [the policy in the past] been thorough. Someone else has made those decisions in the past. I’ve not been privy to it. I know the type of players I want to improve the group and take it forward to next season.

“I think we have to make sure we see a lot more of these guys before they come in, not just the highlights, because we’ve got to make sure we do our recruitment job on them. My future’s out of my hands but I believe I’ll be here next year. I’m planning for next season. The players are playing for their futures.”

Sherwood was speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League game against Benfica at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon. Spurs trail 3-1 after the first leg.
