Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that his side’s 3-0 victory in the Manchester derby on Tuesday will represent an important psychological boost for his players, BBC
The title hopefuls needed less than a minute to go in front at Old Trafford, with Edin Dzeko converting the rebound after Samir Nasri’s shot had hit a post. Despite Man City’s dominance, it took until 11 minutes into the second half to double their lead.
Dzeko was again the scorer, meeting a corner from the right to volley past David De Gea. The win became more emphatic in the final minute of normal time when Yaya Toure drilled home a shot from just inside the penalty area for his fourth goal in two games.
The win moved Man City up to second ahead of Liverpool, who play on Wednesday, and just three points behind leaders Chelsea with two games in hand. And afterwards Pellegrini said: “It was important because it was one of the three big matches we still have to play. I am not thinking about the title but we fight with the other three teams.”
“We continue recovering points on Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, so it was very important to keep adding points. It was an important win against a great team like Manchester United.
“We need to win more points than the other teams but you’ll never know how many points you’ll need.”
