Arsenal squad wants Wenger stay, says Vermaelen

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has revealed he and his teammates hope manager Arsene Wenger signs a new deal with the club, according to ESPN.

Wenger’s current contract expires at the end of the season and despite suggesting he will put pen to paper, the long-serving boss has still not clarified his future. Vermaelen has said, meanwhile, that the Gunners players would welcome Wenger being confirmed in the position for the foreseeable future.

“Everybody wants him to stay as long as he can,” the Belgium international said. “He’s been incredible what he’s done for this club, and for the players as well. We would be really happy for him signing on for a few more years.”

Vermaelen added that he feels this Arsenal team is better than last season’s, with team spirit a major factor.

“The spirit is unbelievable in the team,” Vermaelen continued. “We’ve worked a lot on our team shape and everybody knows their role in the team, everybody’s working for each other and that’s because there is a great team spirit. That’s the great improvement for us this season.

“It is just the hunger in the team. Of course it was there before but the spirit is great and you can see us fighting for each other really hard.”

Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League table, seven points short of leaders Liverpool and four clear of Everton, their next opponents. Should the Toffees win on Sunday at Goodison Park there will be only a point separating the sides and Everton have a game in hand, at home to Crystal Palace.
