After a turbulent week off the pitch, Aston Villa take on Southampton still in need of some points to keep them in the Premier League.
Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa were both suspended in a re-organisation of the backroom staff at Villa Park on Wednesday, in a move that has put the future of manager Paul Lambert slightly under question. In terms of matters on the pitch, recent results have been awful, and a four-game losing streak has seen Aston Villa slip from mid-table security to outsiders for relegation, and some fans are losing patience.
Unlike Villa, Southampton can rest easily in the final weeks of the season safe in the knowledge that eighth place in the Premier League is likely to be theirs, despite a disappointing defeat to lowly Cardiff City last time out. Some of the Saints’ recent away performances have been fairly impressive, and they will fancy their chances of victory here, particularly due to Villa’s wretched home record.
Aston Villa’s task is not made any easier by their injury list, as strikers Christian Benteke and Libor Kozak are both out for the remainder of the season.
Artur Boruc should return in goal for the visitors after overcoming a shoulder injury. Jay Rodriguez is out for six months, while Maya Yoshida is also sidelined.
