After Chelsea dramatically made it into the last four of the Champions League on Tuesday, Manchester United will be hoping to follow in their footsteps by pulling off an unlikely victory at the Allianz Arena.
Despite defending for the majority of the first leg, Man Utd emerged with real credit as they were widely expected to be well beaten in a similar manner to how they were in recent home Premier League games against Liverpool and Manchester City. Admittedly, Bayern were some way off their best, but the Red Devils always looked a threat and could have come away with victory.
Man Utd would have liked to have had Juan Mata available, particularly after his outstanding performance at Newcastle United last time out, but the Spaniard is cup-tied. The presence of Robin van Persie may also be sorely missed, but that Wayne Rooney will be fit enough after missing Saturday’s game with a foot injury represents a major boost, with the visitors knowing they must score to progress.
Victory on Tyneside ensured that Man Utd continued to have the Premier League’s strongest away record, which could give them inspiration in Bavaria, as well as Bayern’s first defeat in over 50 Bundesliga matches at Augsburg at the weekend, albeit with a weakened team. Despite that, Bayern remain the team to beat in this competition and it would be a fine achievement for Man Utd to pull off the victory.
Whatever happens, it is all set up to be an incident-packed evening as two giants of European football battle to reach the semi-finals of its most prestigious competition.
