Cardiff want Crystal Palace defeat annulled

BBC Sporthas reported that Cardiff City want the Premier League to rule that their 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace shouldn’t stand amid the spying allegations made by the Welsh side.

A letter sent by Cardiff to the Premier League has been seen by the BBC and they claim it includes the request that the result be cancelled, described by the BBC as “effectively a three-point deduction against Palace.” Palace deny the allegations.

Cardiff argue that Palace’s sporting director Iain Moody attempted to gain information on the Bluebirds’ line-up in the days leading up to the game, played earlier in April. It is alleged that Moody was unsuccessful in doing so in his first attempt by contacting a former Cardiff colleague, but did gather information from a second source the day before the match.

The five-page document claims that Moody accidentally sent the team to Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman by text message, rather than Palace boss Tony Pulis who, Cardiff allege, was aware of Moody’s attempts to discover the team.

Freedman is said to be a friend of his Cardiff counterpart Ole Gunner Solskjaer and passed the information back to the Norwegian. It is alleged in the text that Moody named a Cardiff player as the source of the leak. The player has denied to the club he had any involvement in the matter and the club have accepted that is the case.

The team sent to Freedman is said to have been the one fielded by Cardiff in the game, and contained three changes from their last fixture. Cardiff also claim Pulis admitted to Solskjaer that he knew the team before the appointed time the teamsheets are to be exchanged.

Cardiff argue Palace have broken three Premier League rules and rules set down by the Football Association, although they have yet to lodge a formal complaint.

On Wednesday Palace beat Everton at Goodison Park, running out 3-2 winners, to move 10 points clear of the bottom three and 11 points clear of Cardiff. Cardiff are in the relegation zone, three points adrift of safety.
