Howard: The ‘real’ Everton will face City

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has claimed that the ‘real’ Everton will return for their match with Manchester City on Saturday, reports.

The Toffees need just a point to confirm European football for the club next season but the race for Champions League football is still on.

Howard believes the Blues showed an ‘uncharacteristic’ performance when they lost 2-0 to Southampton last weekend and is now ready to welcome City to Goodison Park for the penultimate game of the season.

“Those games take care of themselves,” said Howard. “It will be wide open, a tactical battle with top players on display. Those are the easy games to play in.

“It was so unlike us [against Southampton]. It wasn’t just one area; we weren’t at it and we weren’t ourselves. We couldn’t get to the ball and when we had it, we didn’t take care with it.

“There was nothing at either end. The one chance they had hit the post. That should have been 0-0 at worst.

“But all the things people have come to know from us this season – the work and the tireless energy [were missing]. It’s head-scratching.

The American added that time and again his side have put in great performances which have made their Champions League push possible but they will need to pull themselves together quickly from the Southampton defeat if they are to take on City.

Manchester City on the other hand have been given a lifeline by Liverpool’s defeat of Chelsea and can win the title if they win all their remaining games.

“We’ve put in performances this year to dig ourselves out of holes and to get on top of games, but it just wasn’t there [against Southampton],” added Howard.

“The second half was better, but quite honestly it couldn’t have gotten any worse.

“Hopefully we’ll brush it aside as a one-off and we’ll have it all to do against Manchester City.”
