Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has said the team are ready for a potentially decisive top of the Premier League table clash with Manchester City this weekend, ESPN
The Reds are top of the table, two points clear of Chelsea and four ahead of City. City have two games in hand on the teams above them but a Liverpool win at Anfield would extend the gap to seven points with Liverpool having four games to play to City’s six.
“We will see on D-Day who is better prepared to take the points. Of course this could be the biggest league match Liverpool have played in 24 years,” Sakho said. “It’s a match where you win three points – but it’s worth a lot more. It is a match that will place the winner in the best position to go and win the title.
“Ever since I arrived at the club, since the first month, I said it. I told my teammates that we are capable of winning the title. We have the quality and we just have to believe it,” the former Paris Saint-Germain man continued.
“And voila – as the season progressed we saw Liverpool grow in strength playing such beautiful football. We’ve not stolen the position where we are today. We deserve it.”
Sakho is in line to play against City if Daniel Agger’s knee injury fails to clear up before the fixture. The France international partnered Martin Skrtel in the 2-1 win over West Ham on Sunday and added that he doesn’t fear the attacking threat of City.
“We are confident about facing City’s strikers,” Sakho insisted. “They do score a lot of goals but so do we. It will be two beautiful attacks against two strong defences. It’s a top match pitting two top teams against each other fighting for the title.”
