Roberto Martinez believes Steven Naismith has been one of the revelations of Everton’s season, Sky
The Scot was a fringe player in his first year at Goodison Park, having been brought to Merseyside from Rangers by David Moyes and subsequently struggling to win a regular place in the XI.
Little appeared to have changed initially under Martinez but the former Wigan Athletic manager has said that now Naismith has found a settled position, he has become crucial to the Toffees.
“I do believe that Steven Naismith has been the find of the season in terms of the level of performance he has brought to the side in that central position,” Martinez said.
“We’ve seen the player that we all saw at Kilmarnock, emerging as an incredibly bright young footballer. He then went to Rangers and became a match-winner,” the Spaniard continued.
Martinez added that it is Naismith’s tactical awareness, intelligence and team ethic that has most impressed. “He is enjoying his football and works extremely hard and he is one of the brightest footballing brains I have ever worked with,” he went on.
“He is someone that can take information and execute it down to perfection and he has been a real strong character in the dressing room, bringing those strong attributes to the group.”
The 27-year-old Naismith has made 34 appearances for Everton this season, scoring nine times, including the winning goal against Chelsea at Goodison in September and the opener in Everton’s 3-0 win over Arsenal earlier this month.
