Mata thanks former Man Utd boss Moyes

Juan Mata has thanked David Moyes for bringing him to Manchester United and wished the former manager the best for the future, ESPN has reported.

Moyes was sacked last week after a defeat to former club Everton meant United were mathematically unable to qualify for the Champions League this season. United are seventh in the table and under interim manager Ryan Giggs beat Norwich City 4-0 on Saturday.

Mata moved to Old Trafford in January and wrote on his blog that he is grateful to the departed boss. “I don’t want to forget that, since the beginning of the week, David Moyes is no longer our manager,” Mata wrote.

“I wish him and his technical staff the best of luck in the future and I thank him for his continuous interest in me and his importance during my transfer to become a Manchester United player.”

No other Man Utd player has publically praised Moyes in such a fashion, it is noted, as Moyes’ statement after leaving the Premier League champions didn’t reference the players at all.

Mata also praised Giggs for his start as temporary boss and vowed to the United fans that United would do their best to end the season strongly. “It was Ryan Giggs’ first game as a manager after plenty of years of success on the pitch and the truth is everything went well,” Mata wrote.

“Our fans deserve that. They deserve scores like this one because, in this tough season, they have gone home with a downcast face too many times. So that’s what we are going to try [to change] in the remaining games.”

Mata cost a club-record £37.1m in moving to United from Chelsea after falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge. He was brought on as a substitute against the Canaries and scored twice.
