Rodgers wants Lucas to put club before country

Brendan Rodgers has asked Lucas to put the needs of Liverpool before his desire to represent Brazil at the World Cup, ESPN has reported.

Lucas recently returned from a knee injury but has featured only sporadically after his recovery. Rodgers has said that while he appreciates Lucas will want to catch the eye of Brazil Coach Felipe Scolari, his concern is only for the Reds.

“I respect all the players and their needs but I can only think of Liverpool,” Rodgers said. “I want what’s best for Liverpool. That’s where my concentration is.

“I’ve got to say Lucas has been absolutely incredible in his attitude. It’s been hard for him because he played a high percentage of the games when he was fit and obviously then got his injury.”

Rodgers added that Lucas’ approach is one that will be welcomed by the rest of the Brazil squad should he be picked for the tournament, and revealed that the 27-year-old accepts his position as a squad player at Anfield for the time being.

“For those games he has gone away with [Brazil] I am sure they will have been impressed with him. For a World Cup, he will be great for their squad.

“He has made it known to me that he just wants to help whenever he’s called upon, whether it’s for one minute or 90 minutes, he will be ready.”

Liverpool currently top the Premier League table with six games still to play. They are two points better off than second-place Chelsea, who travel to Anfield this month, and four points clear of Manchester City. City also have to go to Anfield but have two games in hand on the two teams above them.
